Silver Moon. The silver lining is the farmer’s hope for the very best on any plantation and the moon is known to be governing moisture. Whether you attribute that to farming folklore or chronicles drawn from the old farmer’s almanac; Silver Moon is perched on the banks of the mighty Orange River at Long 21º 47’ Lat 28º 27’. Silver Moon is Dirk Louw’s silver lining that promises a moonrise that shall bear a harvest of prosperity.
Physical Address; Plot 320 Volgraffsig, Groblershoop, Kheis Municipality (± 90 km to Upington en route from Globlershoop).
As a Historically Disadvantaged Individual (HDI), Dirk Louw’s first farming silver lining struck in 2006 through government’s Land Reform for Agricultural Development (LRAD) when allocated prime irrigable agricultural land. Silver Moon is currently under grapes (23ha), pecan nuts (10ha) and lucerne (10ha) – totalling 43 hectares.
Dirk Louw is a farmer that has paid his dues for the love of the land, eking out a living under the most difficult of times. He remained spirited from 2006 to a time in 2013 when government through the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development rose again to give a silver lining to his promising moonrise. Much needed infrastructural support (see Our Produce) started flowing in and allowing for the capture of the river water that transformed his grapevines, leaving a lushness on the lucerne land and growing the pecan nut trees.
Dirk Louw epitomises the farmer’s grit in being energetic and self-disciplined. He has drawn much inspiration and motivation from the local circumstances of hardships such as unemployment in the pursuit of his entrepreneurial aspirations. Dirk Louw has positioned Silver Moon to respond effectively to the demands of the markets.
